A review of the Indigenous Art Code (the Code) is underway to strengthen protections for First Nations artists and consumers across the country. First Nations consultants Cox Inall Ridgeway is leading the review.

Consultation and engagement concluded at the end of November 2024. A final report with recommendations to strengthen protections is due to be delivered by mid-2025.

What is the Indigenous Art Code?

The Code is a document that sets best practice standards for fair, transparent and ethical trade with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and their art. It was established by the Australian Government in 2010 and is administered by the Indigenous Art Code Ltd.

What is the review?

The review is a commitment in the National Cultural Policy, Revive. It aims to strengthen the protections for First Nations artists and consumers across the country.

During the engagement and consultation phase, Cox Inall Ridgeway heard from more than 400 people across the sector through interviews, an online survey and by accepting written submissions.
